The House That Built Me

There it is, the house that built me. It's a trailer, really, but Mom says it's a house because we put a roof over the top and a permanent foundation. It was a single wide mobile home when we moved it there. Now it's twice the size and not going anywhere. Yep, that's right, we kicked the wheels right off!

My initials are in the cement foundation out back under the shed. It was the first building project I worked on and I was so proud of what I did.

I went on to help hang the dry wall and help build the roof above our heads.

On the right is the cactus they planted to keep me in my room at night. And the nails in the windows were for when the cactus didn't work.

The room my brother now sleeps in was my Christmas gift one year. It was a newly built, bigger room with fresh paint and carpet. The colors I chose were purple and teal. The color I got...was a lovely shade of...mauve. Because what 80's teen doesn't love mauve?! blech!

The pool in the back yard, I helped dig the hole. I got to drive a bobcat and thought I was so cool. Yes, it's an above ground pool under ground! It was a compromise; Mom wanted an in ground pool so cheapo step dad gave it to her!

My mom still lives in the house, but everything inside has completely changed. With all new colors, flooring, and a brand new kitchen, the place hardly looks the same. When I go to visit, it doesn't feel like going home. The house has changed so much it has a life of it's own.
Where now there is bright colors, there used to be dreary brown standard trailer issued faux wood panel wall paper.

Where the laundry room was, was where I sat talking on the phone for hours, trying to talk quietly, so no one would hear.

Before there was a dishwasher I had to wash it all by hand, and then when I was 16 we got a portable dishwasher that you had to roll over to the sink and hook up to the faucet.

The air vents in the floor were great for talking to my sister when we were sent to our rooms.

Across the street, where those houses are is where the cows used to be. We would scale the fence and play cow chip tag, and run scared from the bull.

The place is very different and, yet it's still the same. It is a place that raised a family and sheltered us from rain. The walls they held much comfort when I was locked inside my room. It was my sanctuary, it was my music hall, and it was my place to dream of getting out.  It's not some fancy mansion, with a beautiful view, but even without money we always had something to do. For all that I experienced there from violence to laughter and to tears, it was the place that I grew up in, the place that made me, me.

won't take nothing but a memory from the house that built me (Miranda Lambert)

Music Monday, Perfect Day

Yes, it's Monday, again. Time to go back to work and count down the hours until we get to Friday. The only thing that makes Mondays better is music, of course. Happy Music Monday.

Today's video is a selection by my oldest daughter. As a parent of teens, I think it's important to let them develop their own tastes, and to stay in touch with what they're listening to. Many of the new artists I enjoy are because of songs introduced to me by one of my girls.

#1 especially likes the video because of the sign language interpretor and the special dedication at the end. It's a departure from Jim Jones' usual beats. You've probably heard: We fly high, you know this (ballin')♪
This one is nothing like that.

I like it and I hope you do too. Have a perfect day!

What is your favorite simple recipe to bring to a party?

Wordless Wednesday, Sleepless in The Sand

My girls and I took a much needed day at the beach on Monday. We got out there before 8:00 am when the air was still chilly and the beach was still quiet.

for some reason this picture makes me sing: on a Mexican whoa radio (Wall of Voodoo)

While my youngest and I enjoyed the warm sun rays from the comfort of our blanket, my oldest wandered around looking for shells. The shell hunting lasted just long enough for me to dose off. She would then return and ask "Hey Mom, do you wanna go in the water?" or "Hey Mom, look at this shell!" and then "Hey Mom, are you ready to go in the water?"

It doesn't matter how old the kids are, once you're a mom, you will never sleep again.

Pop Camera Action: Pop Secret $ Giveaway

You know what I love about Awards Season?

It's not seeing what everyone's wearing or who's walking with who down the red carpet. I love fashion, but I want to know about wearable fashion, and my "wearable" doesn't include gowns, designer or otherwise. Give me and award show where the celebs are rocking some killer jeans and I'd be all about what they're wearing!

It's certainly not hearing the long drawn out thank you to everyone I've ever known speeches.  I secretly listen to them in hopes of hearing someone go off the deep end and say "I'd like to thank myself! I worked my butt off to get here and I totally deserve this." Now that would be a speech worth hearing!

What I love most about award season is finding out which movies are the must see's so we can have movie night at home. Movie night is a regular thing at our house. We all have our favorite genres but we come together to watch them all. I admire the actors that can portray a moving character, the composers that put together the great film scores that that tie it all together, and the great directors that keep us on the edge of our seat while moving us to laughter and tears.

At Pop Camera Action, Pop Secret is giving you the chance to be the director. You direct the kernels in a scene of your choice. It's a lot of fun and you may even win a fabulous prize like a 3D home theater. Wouldn't that make for a nice movie night?!

Go ahead go give it a try, then come back to enter our giveaway.

1 reader will be randomly selected to win a Pop Secret Gift Pack that includes a $25 Visa Gift Card, a 3 Pack of Pop Secret Movie Theater Butter Flavor Popcorn, and 1 Box of Raisinets Candy.

Now that's what I call a great prize!

Yummy Pop Secret popcorn, (I don't know about your house, but in my house, We can't keep it in the pantry! Every time I turn around it's time to buy more popcorn!)

NestlĂ© Raisinets provide a ½ serving of real fruit in every ¼ cup and are a natural source of fruit antioxidants, so go ahead and give 'em to the kids, they'll love that it's candy and you'll know they're healthy. Shhh I won't tell.

With that $25 Visa Card, you can rent a lot of movies, or buy your own trophy for an annual family awards night. I bet you'd win best something! Go ahead start practicing that speech.

Mandatory entry for the Pop Secret prize pack: In a comment below, tell me your favorite movie or genre (I love a good musical!)

Monday Music, Soak up the Sun

Photobucket

On Monday morning, my girls and I are getting up early, dropping hubby off at work, and heading to the beach for the day to soak up the sun. Have a great Monday!

A Bad Romance

Mama's Losin' It

My uncle first introduced us, when I was young. We spent time together watching the Red Sox play, sitting in my uncle's big comfy chair. We were always together. It was such a special time.

Then my Mom moved me away to Florida. With the great distance between us, I soon forgot our time together. I watched sports with others. I partied with others. I grew up with others. I had moved on.

Until one day, we were reunited... reunited and it feels so good (Peaches and Herb)

When we got back together, I remembered all our special moments together. Of course, we both had changed a bit, but that was okay. Deep down we were still the same and the flame was rekindled.

Some have tried to tear us apart saying it's not good for me. But I don't listen. No matter what anyone says I know this is a love that will never die.

Sour Cream and Onion Chips, I love you! And, even if my family says to give you up because you make my breath stinky, I don't care because you are just too dang good! I want your ugly, I want your disease I want your love love love love I want your love (Lady GaGa)

Monday Music, I'm No Good in the Morning

Photobucket
This damn time change has me all screwed up. It seems completely backwards. I need more sun in the morning to wake up to, not at night when I want to go to sleep! I hate getting up in the morning, as it is, and now you want me to get up when the sun's not even up?! The clock may say it's time to get up, but my body knows better! I want my hour back!

As I drag myself out of bed and try to find my way on this dark Monday morning, the gritty sounds of Amy Winehouse seems to be the perfect music to express my mood. This is one of my favorite's by her. Meet my downstairs at the bar and hurry

Rock Red Pumps for Awareness

The Red Pump Project These days I'm more of a jeans and sneakers girl, but raising awareness of the impact of HIV and aids on Girls and Women seemed like a great reason to Rock my red shoes!

Back in the late 80's it seemed like everywhere you went there was an AIDS Event, a red ribbon, a celebrity endorsement, something, to remind you of the impact of this disease. Well, the Red Ribbon fad may be gone, but the disease never goes away!
Fact: Every 9 1/2 minutes someone in the U.S. is infected with HIV!
Fact: Of those infected 23% are women!

Fact: from the beginning of the Epidemic through 2005, almost 86000 women have died of AIDS and AIDS-Related Complications.
Fact: The largest number of HIV/AIDS diagnoses in recent years is from women aged 15-39.

15?! If the other facts don't make you take notice, that one should. Our teenage girls are being infected with HIV. Our children, the one's we promised to protect! We can't protect them from everything, and we can't always be there. Certainly you won't be there the moment they make the decision to have sex, but you can arm them with knowledge. Educate them to the importance of practicing safe sex.

Of course, no one wants to think that their 15 year old is having sex, but, teens are having sex. I would rather know my daughter is having sex safely, than have a doctor say she will suffer with HIV for the rest of her life! Wouldn't you?!
I urge you to use today to raise awareness, but use everyday to educate. This disease is not a fad. HIV doesn't go away!

Wordless Wednesday: American Morning

Good morning, America how are you? (Willie Nelson)

Driving to work today, I was struck by the beauty of the sun coming up; not, over a peaceful beach or the serene mountainside of Vacationland, but, up over the everyday hustle and bustle of American lives.

Monday Music: Shooting Rainbows

Photobucket

This is a great song to get you up and moving on a Monday Morning. Blow by Ke$ha

I'm a sucker for rainbows and unicorns, and a good comedy/action flick. And, I love when artists are able to make fun of themselves, so I'm just loving the silliness and creativity of this video. It's just so fun! Don't worry, no mythological creatures were harmed in the making of this video.

Aloha Friday, Living

I was so happy this week to be able to finally buy a Scuba certification class for hubby this week, thanks to a fabulous Groupon deal. He has always wanted to get certified, but we've never been able to afford it. The deal I got saved $200 off the price of the class! Thanks Groupon!

So, my question for you on this beautiful Aloha Friday:

What is one thing you've always wanted to do?

Answer below and then head over to An Island Life for more Aloha Friday posts.
An Island Life

Just My Luck

It was 1991, and I was a reckless teenager. After a long relationship, (11 months, that's like forever in teen time!) with a total loser, I began bouncing from boyfriend to boyfriend, (including a 24 yr old married guy, yikes! lucky his wife didn't kill me!) a week with this one, a month with that one, now I'm talking to this one, you get the picture.

Bear was a guy in my 1st period science class. He was the senior that was always late, with the messy hair, that always seemed to still be sleeping when he came walking in, in the middle of class. He sat on the other side of the very large classroom, so I didn't know him, but, without fail, when he walked in, his friends sang his name in unison, as if he was Norm walking into Cheers.

In February, the science department went on a field trip to Kennedy Space Center. I wasn't particularly excited about the destination, and I only had one friend going with me, but, any day out of class, is a good day. Right?!

My friend Dan and I sat on the back of the bus on the way there. It was totally boring and lame, so he suggested we move up by his friends. And, that's how I met Bear. Bear was part of that group of guys.

We hung out all day roaming around the space center. Bear took my hat, he splashed water on me from the leaky bus window, I "accidentally" sat on him, you know the usual flirty playful stuff. It was on the way home that someone suggested that Bear take me to prom. I was so excited to go to prom with a senior! I couldn't wait! But, he never asked.

Bear and I talked occasionally for the next few months, but never more than a few words. When year books came out, he asked me to sign it. I signed "It's been fun, remember the leaky window, have a nice life." He would be spending the summer in boot camp, and I had no reason to expect to see him again.

With all my goofing off, I had been lucky to not get caught skipping class, but I had failed English and was sentenced to hard time in Summer School.

I dragged myself to class, practically sleepwalking, wanting so much, to still be in bed. And who was sitting there?! Bear! He, too, failed English, and was stuck in summer school. He needed the class to graduate, and so the Navy would have to wait. It was during summer school, that we became best friends.

We still playfully flirted. And I, being the young stupid girl, that I was, made up some story about this guy I was seeing, wanting to marry me, and blah, blah, blah...All little lies in hopes of making him jealous. (this does not work, ladies, so don't try it!) After school, we talked for 5-6 hours on the phone, about anything and everything, sports, my "boyfriend", his old girlfriends. It was a great summer.

But, too soon, Summer ended, and back to school I went.

After a stupid little argument we stopped speaking. It would be months before he finally called me, and lucky for me he did, we picked up right where we left off, talking for hours on the phone. Eventually, we realized that we were spending more time talking to each other than anyone else, and there was a movie, some flirting, and finally, finally...a kiss!

2 Weeks later, he asked me to marry him, and...

All these years later, I've never had much luck with winning prizes, and certainly I've never won the lottery, but luck was with me when I failed my favorite subject, walked into Summer school, and found a best friend and soul mate. It doesn't get any luckier than that!
